Three Sisters Rock Pile
I took this picture some time before rock stacking started to become an issue for many conservation experts; but even so, it did represent an interesting juxtaposition between the natural and the less natural rock towers in Monument Valley
My first experience of a sunset at Monument Valley, so I had to try to capture the more traditional view of these massive sandstone buttes.
Monument Valley Sunset
A traditional view of Monument Valley, but with the added warm colours of the desert sunset. 2017.
Alien Monument Valley
Merrick Butte and the Mittens, this is a slightly doctored image, run through a number of filters to add this faux-limo kind of look. 2010.
This is one of the first of the magnificent sights that greet you on the drive north from Kayenta to Monument Valley in northern Arizona, specifically in the Navajo Nation. This outcropping is called Agathla Peak. 2010
I could spend hours, or even days, wandering around Monument Valley and photographing all the small details, such as this tree which had somehow found a source of water in a very arid landscape. 2010
Mile Marker 13
One of the truly iconic landscapes in the U.S. Taken from Mile Marker 13 in Utah, looking back towards Arizona's Monument Valley. The arrow straight road makes this scene, but most will associate with a massive album cover - that of the Eagles.
Monument Valley Trail
What I love about Monument Valley is that there is a photograph to take no matter where you are, or where you're looking. This shot was taken looking back towards the Three Sisters on the trail from near Artist's Grove. 2017
Three Sister's Ridges
The trouble with photographing Monument Valley is that there is often little contrast in the foreground of a given shot, making normal compositional techniques more difficult to make work. There's a reliance on mid-day shadows, such as in this image from 2017.
Peaking between the Buttes
A distant butte out in the open in Monument Valley, seen through a gap in the massive sandstone features near Artist's Grove. 2017.
Monument Valley Backlands
A long lens look into the backlands of Monument Valley. I could spend hours in this part of the Valley alone - such a great place to explore. 2017.
Middle of Nowhere
So this is where they grow all the tumbleweed? ;-) Monument Valley, a very arid landscape with a sprinkling of greenery. 2017
I'm no biologist, but I assume the roots of this tree take on the look of those that are desperate to find some water. This one found just off the main track in the main basin of Monument Valley. 2017.
Monument Valley Classic
A classic view of Monument Valley, with the three iconic buttes (Merrick, and the East and West Mittens), set against a background which include the backlands and Artist's Grove. 2017.
Jut a simple view of the Merrick Butte, but bathed in amazing late evening light in Monument Valley. 2017
Touring Monument Valley
I just love driving around the bumpy roads / trails of Monument, crawling along to avoid the pot holes and protruding rock - there's certainly an off road feel to it. This was taken in 2017.
Another view of the Merrick Butte, this time looking towards the northern extremity of Monument Valley. 2017
Monument Valley Plains
For the rocky outcrops in Monument Valley, one of the interesting features is the flat and sweeping plains that run eastward from the classic buttes. This shows the Merrick Butte, and one of the Mittens piercing that plane in 2017.
Monument Valley Landscape
Looking back towards the View Hotel, way out there on the horizon to the right of centre of the image. Just an indication of how vast an amazing this landscape is. 2017.
Monument Valley Horses
I watched this horses for a while; that seemed to be finding their own way home, I guess after a shift down in a lower part of Monument Valley. That seemed not at all concerned by myself or the car. 2017.
John Ford's Point
It's a completely set up composition - pay the guy $5 and he'll take horse and stand on the edge for a few minuted. But, what a scene, though. It absolutely conjures memories of old western movies. Monument Valley, 2017.
Monument Valley Grooves
I love the grooves on the this rock, and perhaps it's a popular photograph to take, but I had to get a personal copy of this vista for myself. Monument Valley, 2017.
Monument Valley Glow
The last light of the day looks fantastic on these interesting rock formations that look out over Monument Valley. 2017.
