The Jacobite

The Jacobite

The Jacobite is a West Coast Railways steam train that runs daily excursion services between Fort William and Mallaig in the west Highlands of Scotland. It is famous though, as being the basis of the ‘Hogwarts Express’. Many fans of the film will also recognize the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which has become something of a focal point for the tourists that either ride the train, or find one of the many picturesque vantage points to chart its two-hour journey up and down the coast.

    Crossing Glenfinnan

I bagged this spot by the door as soon as the train left Fort William, determined to get this iconic view of the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, Scotland, 2015. If only the steam locomotive still had a head of steam to puff out, the picture would be complete, but we were slowing down for a station stop.

Most people at this vantage point look the other way, towards the Glenfinnan Viaduct, but this view is just as stunning. This is a shot of the Scottish highlands, near the Bonnie Prince Charlie Monument, 2016.

A view of the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. No Hogwarts Express steam train in this image, sadly, as it was quite late leaving Fort William. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful part of the Scottish landscape, 2016.

    Jacobite and Ben Nevis

I stood waiting on this train at Glenfinnan, and it didn't come, so I got in the car and made my way back to Fort William, before realizing that I might be able to get it here - Loch Eil Outward Bound, in the shadow of Ben Nevis. 2016.

This is where we caught with the Jacobite, after abandoning Glenfinnan due to its non-appearance. This was shot at a rainy Loch Eil Outward Bound, a place I only knew as the name of a Class 37 locomotive in my youth. Scottish Highlands, 2016.
