Outer Hebrides

Lewis, Harris, and Uist

When I was younger, I tended to think of the Scottish Outer Hebrides as some god-forsaken, cold-ridden and brutal landscape, where life was tough. Most of that was wrong, although it has taken my leaving Scotland to come to appreciate the beauty of the western isles. While the Outer Hebrides are located a 6 hour ferry ride from Oban, and exposed to the brutality of the Atlantic winters, I came to understand the draw of these islands. I cannot comment on the realities of life here, but I can attest that it was an uplifting experience. I’m led to understand the residents are fiercely independent of mainland Scotland, and I do respect that. So while I can easily check any patriotism at the ferry slip, I will not deny that I felt fortunate that such stunning landscapes are “on my doorstep”.

    Butt of Lewis

This is the Butt of Lewis, a magnificent cliff face that is exposed to some ferocious waves. Ideally, this is worth a long exposure later in the day, but our time here was limited. North coast of the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, 2011

Somewhere....between Tarbet and Stornaway. A ruthless looking landscape that has seen many troubling winters, I have no doubt. Outer Hebrides, 2011.

  • Wind Weary

    Wind Weary

I wonder what its like to live in this little cottage during the harsh winters of the Outer Hebrides. Not fun, I would guess. Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, 2011.

I just loved this spot, the waves were crashing against the rocks, begging for long exposure treatment. Atlantic coast on the Isle of Harris, 2011

This is, or was, the Rodel Hotel. When I checked in 2018 to make a reservation, again, it was closed. Such a shame. Leverburgh, Isle of Lewis, 2011.

I'm sorry to say to say that the Rodel Hotel, sitting on the edge of this little harbour, has closed its doors. Such a shame, was looking forward to going back there one day. Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, 2011.

Ever seen an airport on the beach? Perhaps this is the only one in the world. This aircraft was seen taxiing out to the "runway" on Barra, in the Outer Hebrides, 2011

    V1, Rotate

V1 is the speed at which the airplane must take off, principally due to the lack of available runway to come to a stop. Wonder what the metrics are here" Cleared for take off from Barra Airport, 2011.
