Mallaig and Arisaig

Local Hero Memories

There is a stretch of coastline just south of Mallaig, in Scotland, that is an absolute joy behold. The glorious white beaches and crystal clear blue waters of Arisaig and Camusdarach are only matched by the views of the islands of Eigg and Rum, just off the Atlantic coast. We’ve visited several times, having arrived at the picturesque fishing port of Mallaig by train. However, the coastline is best viewed by driving there yourself. Only then can you truly revel in the majesty of the coastline, and understand why it is the centerpiece of the success of the famous Burt Lancaster and Peter Capaldi movie ‘Local Hero’.

    Mallaig Trawlers

I don't really know just how well the fishing industry supports small villages such as this in Scotland any more, but there was a collection of well maintained vessels suggesting some kind of activity. This is Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland, 2015.

  • Morar Coastline

    Morar Coastline

I took this image from the Jacobite train, running south from Mallaig, and the colour of the water made me resolve to come back the following year, but by car. I eventually did so, but didn't get the same blue skies, but honestly, this is a stretch of coastline that most in the UK doesn't know exists - it is glorious. 2015

Mallaig Harbour, on the west coast of Scotland, just south and east of Sky, which is where we arrived from on the ferry in this image. This is an old and remote Scottish fishing village - what you see here is pretty much what there is. 2016

    Lord of the Isles Ferry

This is the Lord of the Isles Calmac Ferry, approaching Mallaig Harbour inbound from Armadale, on Skye. We had arrived on this ferry the day before, for an extremely windy crossing during which I was lucky not to lose my hat. 2016

    Arisaig Beach

With the Isle of Eigg on the horizon, this is one of the many amazing coastal landscapes on the Scottish west coast. This beach is between Morar and Arisaig. 2016.

Some lovely blue water on the Scottish west coast. This was at the marina in Arisaig, just south of Mallaig, 2016.

A seaweed strewn and heavily weathered slip in Mallaig Harbour - scene which seems not to have changed a jot since my first visit there 12 years earlier. Scotland, 2022.

This is low tide on the beach at Arisaig, near Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland. The distant islands of Eigg and Rum complete the scene; even the weather speaks to the remoteness of this part of Scotland. 2022.
