Glasgow

City of Glasgow

The City of Glasgow will always be my home, and while it is not necessarily tourist destination, it is a place that I feel I should have photographed more. To date, my interest has been in two of the more photogenic locations in Glasgow. This first one is Glasgow University, where I studied Civil Engineering. The cloisters area (beneath Bute Hall and adjacent the Quandrangle) is the traditional focal point of the University, if not the location of the various faculty departments. The second location is on the River Clyde at Finnieston, looking over towards the Clydeport crane, the Hydro, and even the ‘squinty bridge’. I have photographed this location three times, now, with images that were as fulfilling as I have shot anywhere else in the world.

  • Glasgow Queen Street

    Glasgow Queen Street

Glasgow Queen Street station dates back to 1842, but I'm not sure just how far back the the old station roof goes to. A major fixture in Glasgow city centre. 2009

  • New Lanark Railings

    New Lanark Railings

New Lanark is a magnificently preserved old mill town in Lanarkshire, Scotland. This image has some more personal significant as my sister's wedding reception was held in these buildings! 2012

  • Falls of Clyde

    Falls of Clyde

These are the Falls of Clyde, a raging torrent on the River Clyde near New Lanark, Scotland. The water is generally only a trickle, but on one or two days of the year, upstream water extraction (for hydro) ceases and it is returned to its natural state. 2012.

  • New Lanark Architecture

    New Lanark Architecture

The terraced buildings are amazingly well preserved in New Lanark. A real glimpse into Scotland's not too distant past. Lanarkshire, Scotland, 2012

  • Campsie Sunset

    Campsie Sunset

A sunset view of the Scottish lowlands, looking east from the Campsie Hills. If I was younger and / or fitter, I might have climbed up a little further, but this little rocky pass offered a handy foreground for this image. 2013.

  • Campsie Stream

    Campsie Stream

A seemingly insignificant little stream, but I used to play in this rocky (and quite slippy) stream in the Campsies during the summer when I was a boy. Central Scotland, 2013

  • Morayshire

    Morayshire

This is the steam locomotive #62712 'Morayshire', waiting to depart on the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway, Scotland, 2014.

  • Blue Train

    Blue Train

To rail enthusiast, this is the cab of a electric multiple unit. To the uninitiated, this is the glorified "Blue Train", the commuter unit closely associated with suburban train services in greater Glasgow for a generation or two. Class 303 was seen in the sheds at Bo'ness, Scotland, 2014

  • The Kelpies

    The Kelpies

An oft-photographed modern marvel in Falkirk, Scotland. These are the Kelpies, a monument to the (literal) workhorses of the Forth and Clyde canal from a long distant era. As usual, though, these things are never designed with photography in mind: minimalist images are a challenge here. 2014

  • Clydeport and the Squinty Bridge

    Clydeport and the Squinty Bridge

This is, what is locally known as, the Squinty Bridge on Anderston Quay on the River Clyde, Glasgow, 2015. It's generally lit up quite nicely, right along the arch, creating this subtle effect.

  • Colourful Glasgow

    Colourful Glasgow

Anderston Quay on the River Clyde, Glasgow, 2015. I wish the wind had been a little calmer that night to better capture the reflections from this vibrant waterfront.

  • Clydeport

    Clydeport

The Clydeport Crane, standing proudly in Anderston Quay on the River Clyde, Glasgow, 2015. This is an important landmark in Scotland, and it fits in well with the more modern development growing up around it.

  • Glasgow Night Sky

    Glasgow Night Sky

The wind was enough to produce this nice long exposure effect in the sky over Anderston Quay on the River Clyde, Glasgow, but it was a little too much to see some nice reflections in the water. 2015.

  • Anderston Quay

    Anderston Quay

The Armadillo, the Hydro, and Clydeport are an inescapable trio, lit up on Anderston Quay on the River Clyde, Glasgow, 2015. I love that Glasgow has decided to light up these structures like this - a magnificent sight in the Second City of the Empire.

  • River Clyde at Night

    River Clyde at Night

This is the Hydro (the newer of the auditoriums) and Clydeport, standing proudly on Anderston Quay on the River Clyde, Glasgow, 2015.

  • Clydeport on the River Clyde

    Clydeport on the River Clyde

With a little wind and the subsequent absence of any reflections in the river, I went for a little different approach to editing this Clydeport image, trying to capture some of the warmer colours and boosting the contrast. Glasgow, Scotland. 2016

  • Hydro and Clydeport

    Hydro and Clydeport

It was an overcast summer's afternoon in Glasgow and I had a ten stop filter with me, which made this scene ripe for a back and white conversion. This is the River Clyde, with the Clydeport Crane and the new Hydro in the foreground. Glasgow. 2016

  • Loch Lomond

    Loch Lomond

This is Cameron House, on the banks of Loch Lomond in central Scotland. Only six months after taking this shot, the hotel would suffer a devastating fire. Hope they can find a way to rehabilitate it. This image was taken from an excursion ferry on the water. 2016.

  • Blair Drummod Ostrich

    Blair Drummod Ostrich

Taken at the Blair Drummond Safari Park, near Stirling in Scotland. 2017.

  • River Clyde

    River Clyde

This is a 20 second exposure (f/8) and using a 10 stop filter of the Clydeport Crane on the banks of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland. I loved the way the light of the setting sun fell on this old structure. 2017.

  • River Clyde

    River Clyde

I wanted to catch a sunset shot with the Hydro and Armadillo lit up, but prior to that happening, the setting sun lit up the banks of the River Clyde quite magnificently. Glasgow, Scotland. 2017.
