Forth Bridge

Forth Bridge Prints

Fine art photography prints of the Forth Bridge. This bridge has been a study in my photography education over the last ten to fifteen years. It’s a landmark I come back to time and time again to shoot. Some might call it a lake of imagination, but there’s many examples of photographers with their go-to subjects. However, it is not just because there are so many ways to capture this 125 year+ engineering marvel that I keep on coming back, but because I always enjoy just being there. The Forth Bridge (the rail bridge for the uninitiated) is accompanied by the now semi-redundant Forth Road Bridge and the new Queesnferry Crossing. All three structures, with fundamentally different design approaches, are a fixture on the Scottish landscape.

  • Forth Road Bridge

    Forth Road Bridge

The Forth Bridge has suffered from a number of structural problems for many years now. An elegant looking bridge, but its days as the principal connector between Fife and Lothian are numbered. The Queensferry Crossing will open in 2017 to replace it. This shot was taken in May 2012, when the new crossing was just a twinkle in Holyrood's eye.

  • South Queensferry Panorama

    South Queensferry Panorama

As of 2016 to 2017, this will be an image of the past - just two bridges crossing the Firth of Forth. Absent the new crossing, this was a typical late summer evening shot at South Queensferry, Scotland. 2013

  • Forth Rail Bridge

    Forth Rail Bridge

This is one of my earlier Forth Bridge shots - a more classic composition with a simple black and white conversion. I stood on the shoreline for quite some time waiting for the light to change. Of course, I kept on having to retreat as the tide lapped every more at my feet. It was a challenge to keep coming up with a decent foreground composition! December 2013

  • Firth of Forth

    Firth of Forth

This is the infamous Forth Road Bridge. Infamous due to its ongoing structural deficiencies and maintenance issues, which eventually took such a toll that a new bridge (The Queensferry Crossing) can be seen growing in the background, December 2014.

  • Floodlit

    Floodlit

A 20 second exposure of the Forth Bridge, taken during dusk (just after sundown) on a winter's December evening in 2014 from South Queensferry.

  • Forth Bridge Sunset

    Forth Bridge Sunset

This is a 25 second exposure of a floodlit Forth Bridge, taken in December 2014. I take the time to shoot the bridge almost every time I travel to Scotland; it always seems to look a little different. The tide was in for this shot, which makes such flat calm long exposures every more possible.

  • Floodlit Forth Bridge

    Floodlit Forth Bridge

One of my favourites of the Forth Bridge - taken late on after sun down when the blue hour light was at its finest. I nearly walked back to the the car and missed this shot, but I'm glad I looked over my shoulder as it is probably the best shot I got that evening. December 2014

  • Tranquil Firth of Forth

    Tranquil Firth of Forth

This a 117 second long exposure of the Forth Bridge, happily with the tide in to help with that smooth lake effect. I like the pastel like colours in this image, with the blues of the Firth of Forth complementing the bridge and the clouds. December 2014

  • Forth Bridge Mono

    Forth Bridge Mono

Black and White images of the Forth Bridge look so much better with the tide in - it promotes a more minimalist feel to the shot. I had such an opportunity when I visited South Queensferry in December 2015. Scotland.

  • The Two Bridges

    The Two Bridges

Moonlight over the Forth Bridge and the very soon to be replaced Forth Road Bridge. Taken from the breakwater at Port Edgar marina. I'd love to be able to get safer / better access to this position; this is handheld which is fairly limiting from a creativity point of view. 2015

  • Forth Bridge Lights

    Forth Bridge Lights

I added a star filter to this image, actually on the camera rather than in post-processing, with some interesting effects, if a little exaggerated. This is the Forth Bridge, a gem in Scottish culture, taken during the blue hour in December 2015

  • Forth from North Queensferry

    Forth from North Queensferry

I haven't taken many shots of the Forth Bridge from the North Queensferry side of the estuary, but it was interesting to explore options (in the rain) in December 2016. This is a slightly unconventional composition, taken from the end of a very slipper pier.

  • Floodlit North Queensferry

    Floodlit North Queensferry

I've seen other people's images showing the mist shining in this distinctive v-shape on the south the of the Forth Bridge, but I'd never seen it myself until I took a trip through to shoot the bridge in the rain in December 2016.

  • Queensferry Crossing

    Queensferry Crossing

In the last throws of construction, this is the new Queensferry Crossing, taken on a rainy night from North Queensferry, Scotland, 2016.

  • The Big Bridge

    The Big Bridge

Taken from near the end of Hawes Pier during a mid-tide condition, this is the Forth Bridge, South Queensferry, 2017. f/9, 1/500s exposure. I like the tight troop on this image, accentuating the detail in this genuinely historic structure.

  • Forth Bridge with the Big Stopper

Forth Bridge with the Big Stopper

Another 10 stop filter image of the Forth Bridge. The long exposure and the constructing colours make this a prime target for monochrome conversion. I tend to find minimalist images best for black and white. Scotland, 2017.

  • Still Waters of the Forth

    Still Waters of the Forth

This is a 30 second long exposure, using a 10 stop filter, of the Forth Bridge, Scotland. Got here in time to meet the tide coming in a starting to inundate the mooring bollards on Hawes Pier. 2017

  • The Other Bridges

    The Other Bridges

An image that will soon stabilize and become a fixture on the horizon, now that the distant Queensferry Crossing is nearing completion. Scotland, 2017.

  • Forth Bridge

    Forth Bridge

First time I had taken the time to wander around this part of North Queensferry, in Fife, Scotland. It does provide an interesting vantage point for this panorama of the Forth Bridge, however. 2017.

  • Forth Bridge at North Queensferry

    Forth Bridge at North Queensferry

Some of the items in the image could've been placed a little better, from a photography perspective. Still, it's an interesting foreground for this image of the Forth Bridge, taken from North Queensferry, Scotland, 2017.

  • Gloomy Forth

    Gloomy Forth

A gloomy South Queensferry in the deep of winter, 2022. Seems to me that many of the Forth Bridge floodlights are out of commission in this scene.
