Linville Falls

Appalachian Hiking

Linville Falls is a complete gem that is nestled in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. The main focus are the successive falls over which the Linville River drops across a height of 45 feet into a natural stilling pond beneath. The falls can be viewed from the end of three forest trails. The first, and shortest, leads to the top of the falls where you can observe the raging torrent of water winding its way towards the top of the drop. The other two trails, a mile or so each, provide quite different vantage points. One leads to the site above the waterfall, with elevated views of the bottom of the falls, while the other offers a much wider vista of the Blue Ridge Mountains. My favourite time to view Linville Falls is during the ‘fall colour’ season. The falls can be found of US -221 just south of Grandfather Mountain.

To get to this vantage point requires a one mile trek through the Linville Falls forest. I'd never hiked alone through the North Carolina foothills before, and I wasn't sure whether I'd run into any of the bears that roam this area., NC. 2015

This view of Linville Falls was taken from the first of the elevated vantage points, maybe 0.75 to 1.0 miles from the visitors center. A reasonable work out with a bunch of camera gear. Blue Ridge Mountains, 2015.
