  1. North Carolina

Foothills

Appalachian Life

My in-laws come from the Appalachia foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, and since 2007 I have taken full advantage of our regular visits to the region. It is very much a quiet community with traditional values, and regardless of the appeal of such quiet surroundings, the scenery is just fantastic. The foothills, in this area, are around 40 minutes below the Blue Ridge Parkway, but still close enough that the rolling hills and valleys define the landscape. Through in some winding highways, rural Americana architecture and artefacts, and the seasonal fall colour, and you have the recipe for some fantastic photographic opportunities.

  • Timeless North Carolina

    Timeless North Carolina

This is the back end of Yadkin Valley, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains - the dirt track and the animals roaming about gave me the idea to create a more timeless feel to the image by adding a sepia effect. 2007.

  • Glorious North Carolina

    Glorious North Carolina

One of my older shots, and an opportunist one as we removed the boat from the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir and onto the trailer. Love the way the sunset pierces the river bank on the far side, NC. 2010.

  • Southern Life

    Southern Life

Since this shot was taken, the grass has been and the tracks are barely in evidence but with the archetypal barn in the background this scene did look at the time to be true example of rural Americana. Yadkin Valley, NC 2010.

  • Woodland Snow

    Woodland Snow

A backland shack in the snow in North Carolina. This opening in the forest was a place that I didn't know existed until my wife and I took a walk behind her parent's rural property. 2011

  • Yadkin

    Yadkin

A typical rural property in the south of the United States, this in the foothills in North Carolina: Yadkin Valley, NC. 2012.

  • Foggy Yadkin

    Foggy Yadkin

Christmas Day in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, NC. One of the very first images i shot with my new Nikon D800. Had lots of fun that day with this camera in the wintry conditions. 2012.

  • Highway 268 Fog

    Highway 268 Fog

A love the yellow lines of the American highway; they stand out so well and provide a perfect focal point for every image, including this fog-bound scene in Yadkin Valley, NC. 2012.

  • Patterson Dam

    Patterson Dam

I've always been interested in this small dam, known as Patterson Dam. The water course snakes its easy down into Yadkin Valley in North Carolina Foothills. This is during a rainy period in the winter of 2012.

  • Appalachian Waterfall

    Appalachian Waterfall

Taking this shot nearly ended very bad for me. As I stood up from taking this long exposure near Wilson Creek I lost my footing on the slick rock and was just a few feet away from going over a 10 ft ledge. Heart in mouth. 2012.

  • Rural Americana

    Rural Americana

My camera died just a few days earlier having taken a dip (along with me) in a North Carolina river. Amazingly it sprouted back to life and I went to my in-laws rural back yard to test it out. The result was this image of hay bales on farmland in Yadkin Valley, NC. 2012

  • Highway 268

    Highway 268

The main drag through rural Caldwell County, between Lenoir and Wilkesboro. I was told this was peak fall color given the mild winter up till Thanksgiving, but not convinced...... 2016.

  • Kerr Scott Reservoir Dam

    Kerr Scott Reservoir Dam

A view looking out over the Kerr Scott reservoir and dam. North Carolina, Wilkes County, 2016.

  • Sunset over Wilkes County

    Sunset over Wilkes County

I've sat on the top of this dam for a few hours now, waiting in the cold on the sunset and then the night arriving for long some exposes. This is the Kerr Scott Reservoir, North Carolina, Wilkes County, 2016.

  • Kerr Scott Stars

    Kerr Scott Stars

This is a photo manipulation, two shots then about an hour apart - one exposure for the lake and another for the stars. North Carolina, Wilkes County, 2016.

  • Sundown

    Sundown

I do love to add a strong matte finish to some of my sunset images, creating these silhouettes. Kerr Scotti Reservoir, North Carolina, Wilkes County, 2016.

  • Winding through the Foothills

    Winding through the Foothills

Who doesn't love a winding rural road? This was a real drivers road, but you've got to respect the locals and also the magnificent fall colors of autumnal North Carolina. 2016

  • Apex

    Apex

For some reason, I particularly like this image from my hour long jaunt through the back roads of Yadkin Valley - I guess it's the convergence of lines, not to mention the colors. 2016

  • Lesser known S-curve

    Lesser known S-curve

I just love the way this rural highway gracefully makes its way through the fields, hills, and houses here. It was made for the camera, not to mention a Sunday drive. This is Yadkin Valley, rural North Carolina.

  • Red

    Red

Red leafs in the fall make for some wonderful photographic opportunities, NC. 2016.

  • Autumnal Garden

    Autumnal Garden

Took some time to wander about my in-laws rural back yard in North Carolina, armed only with a 60 mm prime. This afforded me the opportunity to get some different types photos of the fall color. Thanksgiving 2016.

  • Foothills

    Foothills

You simply cannot understate the photogenic quality of the class rural American barn. Add a little texture into the image, and you get an almost timeless scene, Caldwell County, NC. 2016

  • Foothills in the Rain

    Foothills in the Rain

A soggy and rainy day in the country. Sitting on Highway 268 in the North Carolina foothills. 2019.
