Looking South
This was one of my first shots of Grandfather Mountain, taken from the car park near the peak, looking out east towards the foothills. I've tried to re-cereate this image a few times with a higher resolution camera , but you can never quite do it like you did it the first time.2007.
Grandmother Mountain
Another of my older shots, taken from near the top of Grandfather Mountain, NC. I like the way the black and white brings out the contrast and accentuates the ridge lines looking out towards Linville. 2007.
Appalachian Color
This was the first time I had really experienced the fall color of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. Taken from Grandfather Mountain, it was like a blanket draped across the hills. 2007.
Linville Sunset
Another of my favourites, and another older shot. A long lens view of a pink sky over the Blue Ridge Mountains, nr Blowing Rock, taken from the edge of US highway #321. Love the detail in the ridge lines, with just a hint of snow. 2011
Sunset Rays
Taken from the US Highway #321, this was one of the best vantage points of the Blue Ridge Mountains, from just south of Blowing Rock. In this shot you can see all the way as far as Linville. 2011
Appalachian Sunset Profile
To date, I still don't know the name of that distinctive Blue Ridge Mountains peak which is a feature of my of my images; near Linville I think. North Carolina, 2011.
Approaching Storm
I was trying to recreate my very first shot of Grandfather Mountain, but with better equipment, when this Appalachian storm starred close in our position. I didn't have long before taking shelter in the car, and being subjected to a half hour battering by the elements. 2009.
Underneath the Storm
Grandfather Mountain, 2009.
Price Park Dam Sunset
Another older image of the lake at Price Park, in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, NC. 2009.
Yadkin Fog
There was an eery fog hanging over Yadkin Valley in North Carolina on Christmas Day, and Santa had brought me a new Nikon. Great fun creating some winter black and whites. Highway 268 Caldwell Co. NC. 2012
Parkway Snow
I applied a matte effect to this black and white image of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I think it added a little depth to the image. Taken just north of Blowing Rock, 2012.
Parkway Panorama
Always love the way the ice becomes more and more prominent as you climb us highway #321 through Blowing Rock. This was the magnificent winter scene that greeted us as we joined the Blue Ridge Parkway, NC. 2012
Snow on the Parkway
A winter scene along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is at the intersection between the parkway and US#221 near Blowing Rock, NC. 2012
Split Rail at Blowing Rock
This scene was weird. It took the short climb driving from Blowing Rock to the nearby intersection with the Blue Ridge Parkway to see some snow, but the transition was stunning. North Carolina, 2012.
Icicles
I took a drive east along the Blue Ridge Parkway rather than west on the this trip, hoping to see something interesting and I was amazed by these rectangular icicles hanging off a fence. Very very cold that day! North Carolina. 2012
Blue Ridge Parkway Ice
A close up of those odd looking rectangular icicles, on a very cold Blue Ridge Parkway at Chimney Rock, NC. 2012
Chimney Rock Ice
It was very cold and the low clouds created some quite eery scenes during my my drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. NC. 2012
Lush Linville
Take in the near-autumn of 2012, before colour set int, the Blue Ridge Mountains were a scene of rich and lush greens. This was taken just after a late summer storm from near Grandfather Mountain.
Blue Ridge Parkway at Linville
The Blue Ridge Parkway can be *so* quiet at times, it makes it easy to stop, set up and get eery shots like this. The masonry finish on this bridge makes this Blue Ridge Mountains scene look like an idyllically quiet landscape. North Carolina, 2010
Grandfather Mountain Ice
The ice line was perfectly in evidence on Grandfather Mountain as we drove along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's a very odd sight, that's for sure; amazing to see such a transition. North Carolina 2012.
Parkway at Grandfather Mountain
Split rail fencing is long tradition in this part of the world and actually still very common along the Blue Ridge Parkway. North Carolina, 2013.
Woodland Carpet
I've often tried to get this kind of view of the Blue Ridge Mountnins - accentuating each individual layer of the many hilltops that make up this landscape. Sunset from Grandfather Mountain, NC. 2013.
This is the Linn Cove viaduct, known for car commercials due to its photogenic sweeping profile. It snakes around a part of Grandfather Mountain along the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC. 2013.
Sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains at Grandfather Mountain, NC. This shot was taken on New Year's Eve, perhaps the first time in my adult life that I wasn't already settled into a New Year party. Odd, but very satisfying to be sober and out taking this shot. ;-) 2013.
