New Orleans

New Orleans Photography

A collection of images of New Orleans, known to some outsiders as the Big Easy. This was my home for five years an a place I grew very attached to. Living in Uptown New Orleans, I became a perpetual tourists, immersing myself in all the city had to offer. This included the French Quarter, the festivals, the leafy avenues with antebellum era / colonial homes. It’s a city that very much embraces and holds tightly onto its traditions.

  • Bourbon Street Bars

    Bourbon Street Bars

All the temptations on offer in the New Orleans French Quarter (well nearly all). Daiquiris and a Jazz Funeral - all drink related. 2008.

  • Oak Alley Plantation.

    Oak Alley Plantation.

An iconic site in the south; a live oak tree lined pathway to a grand plantation house. This is one of the more famous ones, Oak Alley Plantation on the back of the Mississippi River near New Orleans, 2009.

  • Roman Candy

    Roman Candy

Five years in NOLA and I never once tried Roman Candy - must be something wrong with me. This cart seemed to pop up everywhere I went. St Charles Avenue, New Orleans, 2008

  • St. Louis Cathedral

    St. Louis Cathedral

This is St. Louis Cathedral - a stand out landmark in the New Orleans French Quarter. I've taken many shots of the cathedral, but this may be my favourite. 2007.

  • Jackson Square

    Jackson Square

St. Louis Cathedral, looking out over Jackson Square in the New Orleans French Quarter. 2007

  • SOCO in New Orleans

    SOCO in New Orleans

I didn't actually realize that Southern Comfort was first served in New Orleans, or that it was abbreviated to SOCO. Seems fitting to see it on a billboard on Canal Street, New Orleans, 2007.

  • LSU Party

    LSU Party

An LSU party on Bourbon Street before the National Championship in 2008. This was a typical scene on most nights during the festive period, but extra special given that LSU were a local favourite.

  • Retro Magazine Street

    Retro Magazine Street

Magazine Street is full of quirky establishments such as this antiquated garage; it truly does provide example after example of the juxtaposition of the old and dilapidated and the more upscale businesses. Uptown New Orleans, 2008

  • NOLA Fire Escape

    NOLA Fire Escape

An interesting juxtaposition of the old New Orleans French Quarter fire escapes and the more modern skyscraper. 2008

  • Igors and Busters

    Igors and Busters

Rigors and Busters; I frequented these bars on St Charles Avenue a few times in the dead of night on my way back from the French Quarter - always seemed to be full of life at any hour. New Orleans.

  • Garden District Streetcar

    Garden District Streetcar

This is a photo-manipulation. It had actually rained hard, but parts of the reflection are the result of some artistic intervention. ;-) Washington Avenue, New Orleans, 2008

  • Central City

    Central City

A fairly unremarkable site, but perhaps one day this run down scene will seem a little more dated. This is a rather downscale store on Claiborne Avenue, New Orleans, 2008

  • Loitering

    Loitering

Not much going on - but it is quite different from the atmosphere just a couple of miles away in the Garden District. This is till New Orleans, though. Claiborne Avenue, 2008.

  • New Orleans Jazz

    New Orleans Jazz

A New Orleans artwork, combining images of Jazz and Mardi Gras. 2009.

  • Jazz Trumpet

    Jazz Trumpet

A performer pauses during a a set in the New Orleans French Quarter Fest, on the Moonwalk Riverfront. Barely anything more iconic in NOLA than the simple trumpet. 2008

  • One Shell Square

    One Shell Square

This is One Shell Square, the tallest building in Louisiana. There is actually a building based on the same apparent design in Houston. 2009.

  • Lafitte, Louisiana, 2008

    Lafitte, Louisiana, 2008

A gruesome reminder of the vulnerability of coastal Louisiana to tropical events. Hurricane Katrina damaged property, south of Barataria. 2009

  • Crawfish Boil

    Crawfish Boil

What spring party scene is complete in the South without a crawfish boil? These crawfish were served up in the French Quarter Fest, 2008

  • Out of Gas

    Out of Gas

An old abandoned gas station in Destrehan, New Orleans. Shot taken in 2009, but with some very heavy post processing, including a texture sourced from a cement wall in the FQ!

  • Drove my Chevy to the Levee

Drove my Chevy to the Levee

I had a Chevy, and I parked it on an actual levee; specifically the Mississippi River levee at Norco, near the Bonnet Carre Spillway in St Charles Parish, Louisiana. 2009

    Bourbon Cowboy

This "bourbon cowboy" was spotted not at the eponymous bar, but outside the Famous Door, New Orleans, 2007

  • Audubon Park Sunset

    Audubon Park Sunset

A heavily textured image from one of my favourite spots in Uptown New Orleans. This is from the little bridge that crosses the rookery into the Audubon Park Golf Course on the east side of the park. 2010
