Mississippi River

New Orleans and the Mississippi River

The Mississippi River is more than a water born thoroughfare, draining 40% of the United States. It’s the cultural icon, around which many great works of literature have written and many wistful songs have been penned. As it threads its way around the land masses of New Orleans, the river is wide, deep, and integral to the the culture of this great city. I was lucky enough to live just a mile from its banks, and have an office which overlooked the grain loaders of Leake Avenue.

    Grain Loader Sunset

A sight that I got so see on a regular basis - the Leake Avenue grain loader on the Mississippi River, New Orleans. It was a joy to step outside the office after work at times and I was very lucky to have worked here. 2007

  • New Orleans Aerial

    New Orleans Aerial

The whole of New Orleans in one image. Took this shot from a light aircraft approaching the city from the south in 2011. I love it because it captures, in a single image, my life for 5 years.

  • Downtown New Orleans

    Downtown New Orleans

Taken from a light aircraft on a tour of south east Louisiana, we got the opportunity to get this aerial shot of the Crescent City Connection twin truss bridges crossing the Mississippi River in New Orleans, 2010

  • Warta

    Warta

This is the Warta, at anchor in the Port of New Orleans. Such is the traffic through this port that vessels often have to wait their turn to berth, hence the frequently observed line of vessels anchored on the Mississippi River. 2010

    Natchez Stern Wheeler

The Natchez stern wheeler - the only operational steam driven paddle wheeler in the U.S. today. Seen here passing Chalmette on the Mississippi River, New Orleans, 2011

  • Creole Queen

    Creole Queen

The Creole Queen, a diesel powered stern wheeler, pushes off from the berth on the Mississippi River banks in New Orleans, 2011. I was actually married on this boat, so it is always nice to see it.

  • Mississippi River Flooding

    Mississippi River Flooding

I like this image for several reasons; I used to drive along River Road regularly. The spring flooding of the Mississippi and the potential threat it poses due to a levee breach is perfectly evident. High water of the spring of 2011, New Orleans.

  • Crescent City Connection

    Crescent City Connection

Love this view of the Crescent City Connection; the twin truss bridges that cross the Mississippi River in New Orleans. Took this picture from a helicopter. What a view! 2008.

  • Creole Queen

So.....I got married on this boat, which made it such an irresistible photographic opportunity when we flew overhead in a helicopter. Creole Queen aerial, Mississippi River, 2011

    Moonlit Mississippi

One of the last images I took when living in the city, it was another one that I had wanted for a while, but had hesitated to travel to this levee in Algiers alone at night. Crescent City Bridge, New Orleans, 2011
