Houston

Houston Skyscrapers

Photographing Houston has centered on one major theme for me, which is the impressive array of skyscrapers. The USA is known for its super tall skyscrapers, even if their height has now been surpassed by those in the middle east. Houston, though, has the highest towers in Texas, and some of the most distinctive nationwide. The JP Morgan and the Wells Fargo towers compete for height, but there is an array of magnificently crafted buildings jostling for space. The towers, more so than many in US cities, line up to form a beautiful sight at night, something that is only rivaled in places like Chicago or New York.

  • Morgan Chase Tower

    Morgan Chase Tower

The dominant tower in downtown Houston, and in fact the tallest in Texas. This is the Morgan Chase tower. I like this design, it's simple and little daunting, accentuating height and the audacity of skyscraper construction. 2012

  • George Bush Park Sunset

    George Bush Park Sunset

I went out to George Bush Park in West Houston to get a shot of the Pan-Starrs comet, but the sunset on its own was nice enough. Texas, 2013

  • USS Texas

    USS Texas

This is the USS Texas, a World War I Dreadnought, at home in Houston, Texas. The Texas is somewhat troubled, however, with severe degradation of the hull - major works are required to keep this monument in a semi-reasonable condition.

  • San Jacinto Monument

    San Jacinto Monument

As of 2018, this was my one and only visit to the San Jacinto Monument; sitting out in east Houston amid the myriad of industry and refineries. This is an HDR shot, hence the interesting detail on the brickwork. Texas, 2012

  • Downtown Reflections

    Downtown Reflections

Reflections on the glazed finish of a typical Houston skyscraper, Texas, 2013

  • Enron Towers

    Enron Towers

These towers are among the most striking in downtown Houston. The sleek lines and curves are made for a mono conversion. You wouldn't know that they were associated with one of the biggest financial scandals in history - the Enron scandal. Texas, 2013

  • Downtown Houston

    Downtown Houston

Unlike the rest of Houston, the downtown area is an apparently eclectic mix of skyscraper designs; with a number of semi-contemporary designs. 2013.

  • Houston Skyline

    Houston Skyline

An 83 second (why? don't know) long exposure with a big stopper filter of the downtown Houston skyline in Texas, 2013.

  • Houston Reflections

    Houston Reflections

As of writing (2018), I haven't seen this reflection pool filled with anything but leaves. Shame, because it makes for quite a sight. Downtown Houston, 2013

  • Colorful Houston

    Colorful Houston

Got here at just the right time to get this image - darkness was just about to fall and the lights of the Wells Fargo Building and City Hall perfectly lit up the scene. 2013

  • Houston at Night

    Houston at Night

A 25 second long exposure of the Houston skyline in the early evening, taken from the small footbridge crossing the Buffalo Bayou. 2013

  • Energy City

    Energy City

I will have to admit that I was fairly apprehensive of hauling my equipment about in this part of town, and I had to prop my tripod up precariously just to get this long exposure. Still, the lights of downtown Houston are worth the effort. Allen Parkway, Houston, 2013

A shot of the Houston skyline in black and white. Taken from the footbridge over Memorial Drive. 2013.

A heavily edited (matte finish) image of Hermann Park, Houston. This was taken at sunset as we waited the 4th July fireworks after a heavy thunderstorm. 2014

  • Sunset Skyline

    Sunset Skyline

This is just one of many (and still more to come) explorations of the Downtown Houston parking lot roofs, in an effort to find the best vantage spots for skyline shots. Best to do it during baseball season as they will be open on a Saturday night! 2014

4th of July fireworks over the Hughes Landing area of The Woodlands, on Lake Woodlands. Lots of debris in the lake after a big afternoon storm. Texas 2018.
