Coastal Louisiana

Swamps and Marshes of Louisiana

Coastal Louisiana represents one of the most diverse but vulnerable coastlines in the U.S. In places it is rapidly disappearing due to sea level rise. The deltaic qualities accelerate this process, with much of the landscape at or just above sea level. This, though, creates a vibrant coastal habitat, which can sometimes be breathtaking. This collection of images of Coastal Louisiana includes the Bonne Carre Spillway, the Mississippi River, Barataria and Lake Salvador alligators, and the sunsets of Lake Pontchartrain, Lafitte, Kenta Canal, the Le Branche Wetlands, and St. Charles Parish.

  • Inundation

    Inundation

This is (or was) a Cypress tree, which was seen in the nearshore area of Lake Pontchartrain, near the outfall of the Bonnet Carre Spillway. I guess this image illustrates the progress of sea level rise as it seems unlikely the tree would establish in such a depth of water. 2008

  • Lake Pontchartrain Sunset

    Lake Pontchartrain Sunset

A very bare Bald Cypress tree, part of a very desolate landscape in the Bonnet Carre Spillway, taken at sunset in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, on the banks of Lake Pontchartrain. 2008.

  • Bonnet Carre Spillway Sunset

    Bonnet Carre Spillway Sunset

Had a little fun with this one - added a texture and some colour corrections to create a more obscure image of the forested area of the Bonnet Carre Spillway wetlands. St Charles Parish, Louisiana, 2008.

  • Airline Drive

    Airline Drive

Took this shot on the way back from a late winter afternoon trip to St Charles Parish. This is alongside Airline Drive in the Le Branche Wetlands, 2008

  • Barataria Boardwalk

    Barataria Boardwalk

I've walked this boardwalk many times, but I've never seen as many sunbathing alligators as I did on my first visit here. Barataria boardwalk along the Kenta Canal in the Jean Lafitte Nature Preserve, 2010

  • Kenta Canal

    Kenta Canal

A slightly modified image of the confluence of two canals in the Jean Lafitte Nature Preserve, south east Louisiana. 2008

  • Confluence in Barataria

The outfall of the Kenta Canal in the Jean Lafitte Nature Preserve, 2008.

  • Henderson Swamp

    Henderson Swamp

A nod to the Clean Water Act in a region that would turn their nose up at regulations. A Swamp Prayer in Atchafalaya, Louisiana, 2008.

  • Atchafalya

    Atchafalya

This is a textured image of Henderson Marsh. For those that me be familiar, this is the marsh that is beneath the very long 1-10 bridge near Lafayette, Louisiana, 2008

  • Surfacing

    Surfacing

One of my older alligator shots, this one of a beast surfacing ominously in Lake Salvador, Louisiana, 2008.

  • Barataria Lizard

    Barataria Lizard

One of my oldest images. A simple lizard posing for the camera in Barataria, aprt of the Jean Lafitte Nature Preserve, 2008

  • Bonnet Carre Spillway

    Bonnet Carre Spillway

Cranes in operation during high water on the Bonnet Carre Spillway. This structure helps alleviate flooding on the Mississippi River, diverting flows upstream of New Orleans. 2011

  • Audubon 'Gator

    Audubon 'Gator

Audubon Zoo is probably the best place to see big alligators in south east Louisiana, but as they are in captivity you just don't get the same sense of wonder as you do when you see them in the wild. New Orleans, 2011

  • South East Louisiana

    South East Louisiana

Another view of the vanishing wetlands of south east Louisiana, with this marsh being located south and east of the MRGO, near the Gulf of Mexico coastline. 2010

  • Disappearing Wetlands

    Disappearing Wetlands

This is another view of the south east Louisiana wetlands, much of which is vanishing marsh at a worrying rate - this view was just east of the MRGO navigation channel, which was de-authorized soon after this shot. 2010

  • Sea Level Rise Fortress

    Sea Level Rise Fortress

Not sure what to make of this place; the rock berm is clearly designed to challenge the onset of sea level rise, but not quite effectively. Aerial image of south east Louisiana, 2010

  • Aerial Louisiana

    Aerial Louisiana

Taken from about 3,000 or 4,000 feet, this is a shot of the wetlands on the western side of the old Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, or Mr. Go, to those familiar with this now defunct navigation channel. 2010

  • Crossing the Mississippi

    Crossing the Mississippi

This is the Mississippi River crossing at Vicksburg, in the state of Mississippi itself, taken after sunset. I was only here for work and this was an opportunistic shot. 2010

  • Barataria Frog

    Barataria Frog

Another amphibian posing fort he camera, this time in the shallow edges of the Kenta Canal in Barataria. Jean Lafitte Nature Preserve, 2010

  • Big Branch Lilly Pad

    Big Branch Lilly Pad

A very commonly photographed view of any Louisiana swamp, but why not get such a shot for myself? This is in the Big Branch marsh, on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, 2010

  • Big Branch Swamp

    Big Branch Swamp

This is the Big Branch Swamp, on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, near New Orleans. It was blazing hot that day in the South, with plenty of obscure tropical wildlife in evidence. 2010

  • Watching Me

    Watching Me

Watching me, or not? This alligator appeared from shallow waters of Kenta Canal just 10 or 15 feet from my position. Very enticing and I took some care to get the shot - and stay safe! Barataria, south east Louisiana, 2010

  • Pontachoula, 2011

    Pontachoula, 2011

A Confederate Civil War Re-enactment in Pontachoula, Louisiana. I've learnt a lot more about these issues since I've been in the USA, and these people are fascinating, even if the event is not to my taste. 2011.
