Tonto National Forest

Tonto National Forest

The Tonto National Forest stretches over a vast swathe of central Arizona. While not necessarily characterized by desert landscapes of the south and west, there is definitely and hot and sweaty feel to this part of the state. On my two trips into the Tonto National Forest, I was more passing through than anything else, but for a couple of stops at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum and the cactus filled Superstition Mountains. It was the journeys through this landscape which took my breath away, particularly the mix of rocky alien hillsides and heavily forested parts between Miami and Superior. There is much to be explored here on future visits.

  • Interstate 10 Arizona

    Interstate 10 Arizona

This is Interstate 10, in south east Arizona, looking east into a rising moon. I-10 stretches from Florida to Los Angeles, and I think the only state where I have not driven a bunch of miles on this highway is New Mexico. 2017

  • Interstate 10 Sunset

    Interstate 10 Sunset

Another view of the Interstate 10, this time looking west into the setting sun and towards a very distant Tucson. I love these lonely highway images; very much an Americana thing. Arizona, 2017.

  • Deserted Miami

    Deserted Miami

Another image of a deserted high street in Miami, Arizona. It's probably an amazing contrast with the *other* Miami. It was a Sunday morning, in fairness, but it still had an eerie feel to it. 2017.

  • Miami Storefronts

    Miami Storefronts

How many soda fountains are there left in the U.S? Seemed like a set straight out of Back to the Future. This is the historic downtown of Miami, taken on a deserted Sunday morning in eastern Arizona. 2017.

  • Sunday Morning

    Sunday Morning

Sunday mornings are quiet at the best of times, but this scene was eerily quiet. This is Miami, a small historic downtown in eastern Arizona. Quaint and timeless barely begun to describe this place. 2017.

  • Little Miami

    Little Miami

It was a Sunday morning, and little corner of eastern Arizona- fair enough, but this place was utterly deserted, which left me free to roam around and take whatever photos I liked. 2017.

  • Miami Storefronts

    Miami Storefronts

This is the small town of Miami, in eastern Arizona. These storefronts were quaint enough, but this shot was taken on a deserted Sunday morning, making them seem all the more interesting. I wondered how busy this place got during the peak business hours. 2017.

  • Dry Miami

    Dry Miami

This was a common sight throughout my trip through Arizona - a dried up river bed. Dry weather can explain it, but apparently we had just missed snow I'm higher elevations. This is in the backstreets of Miami, the lesser known Miami, tucked away in the east of Arizona. 2017.

  • Gramma's House

    Gramma's House

This is a textured image of an old antique shop storefront in the quaint (and deserted) Arizona town of Miami. I had all the time in the world to photograph this old historic downtown area without other people wandering into the frame, as it was a Sunday morning. A pleasant break from the norms of this type of photography. Arizona. 2017

  • Arizona Formations

    Arizona Formations

Not sure what to make of these specific rock formations, buy they were interesting enough that I pulled off to the side of the road to get the shot. These formations are in the Superstition Mountains in eastern Arizona. 2017.

  • Superstition Mountains

    Superstition Mountains

We pulled off to the side, it seemed like, every few miles to taken in the sight of the yet another archetypal American highway meandering its way through a glorious landscape. This one was in the Superstition Mountains, between Globe and Superior in eastern Arizona, 2017.

  • Superstition Mountains Highway

    Superstition Mountains Highway

I took another shot looking back up this way at the lay by at the turn on the right hand side of the image. You can see the fragmented nature of the rock formations in this image - an utterly amazing sight. Arizona 2017.

  • Tonto National Forest

    Tonto National Forest

This is eastern Arizona- in the Superstition Mountains, which is in the lower reaches of the Tonto National Forest. We were driving downhill towards Queen Creek Tunnel and couldn't resist stopping to take in this view; crouching down in the middle of the road to get the shot. 2017.

  • Superstition Landscapes

    Superstition Landscapes

There's a very alien quality to the rocky landscape across the central belt of Arizona- myriad of boulder type formations seem to be a very common sight. It's genuinely like nothing that I've seen before. This was taken near to the Queen Creek Tunnel. 2017.

  • Queens Creek

    Queens Creek

This is the Queens Creek gorge, taken just outside the entrance to the eponymous tunnel in the Superstition Mountains, east Arizona. Any practitioner of photography will know that a foreground is important in an image, and I do like the way the rock stack infront performed in the role. 2017.

  • Arizona Sundial

    Arizona Sundial

Not often you see a sundial these days, and when you do, there's always a tendency to get that it's telling the time correctly. This particular example was seen at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, in eastern Arizona. 2017.

  • Arizona Cactus

    Arizona Cactus

Visiting southern Arizona, I really wanted one those iconic sunset cactus tree shots. Alas, our driving plans meant that it didn't quite work out, and that once we were as far north as Flagstaff, they were nowhere to be seen! Nevertheless, a little tinkering with some filters and some textures, and I ended up with this image from the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. 2017.

  • Boyce Thompson Landscape

    Boyce Thompson Landscape

This landscape image of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum was taken in the cactus tree park area; a bit more of an expansive landscape than the rest of the site. This meant that I got to break out the wide angle lens for this very typical western scene. 2017.

  • Boyce Thompson Catcus

    Boyce Thompson Catcus

This view is from a trail which was a little easier than I expected - the rocky trail on the south side of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in southern Arizona. Lots of cactus trees on this trail, and one or two nice views looking back along this modest looking gorge. 2017.

  • Western Landscape

    Western Landscape

Nothing completes a western landscape like a lone cactus tree; and the taller and slender the better. This lonely desert icon was part of the landscape at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, a truly interesting glimpse into western ecosystem. Arizona 2017.

  • Superstition Mountains

    Superstition Mountains

The vegetation / trees in the southern half of Arizona is so fascinating. I could spend days or weeks photographing the state. Superstition Mountains, Arizona. 2021
