Titan Missile Museum

Picard’s Phoenix

As a tourist location, the Titan II Missile Museum offers a quite different of experience for travelers in the Arizona desert. A relic from the Cold War, the missile silo was one of many such installations that stood ready to fire an intercontinental ballistic missile into the skies. It is now that last remaining such installation and visitors can explore the silo and the underground control room. The rudimentary feel to the technology offers a glimpse into the Cold War era, which is quite less sophisticated than modern infrastructure. Nuclear codes, for example, were kept in a filing cabinet, which is still there today. There is a missile in the silo, which is quite difficult to photograph from behind the glare of the glass. Those with a keen eye will observe the open hatch in the nose – a firm requirement to prove that the missile does not house a warhead!

The former nuclear ICMB is now a cold war artifact - an important an breathtaking reminder of a significant period in history. On a side note, it was very difficult to get this shot as the glazing did nothing to shield the new from the Arizona sun. 2017
