Sedona

A home in the Arizona Desert

I have come to consider Sedona as a place that I would no complaints about retiring to. This desert landscape is just beautiful. The city is nestled in the scrub-like sprawl of the Coconino National Forest, amid the towering sandstone buttes that surround the Broken Arrow landscape. Such is my affinity for Sedona, that at the conclusion of the drive down the stunning highway 89-A, the landscape opens up into to layers of buttes, and a warm glow descends. While Sedona may be swelteringly hot, there is plenty of escapism from the heat on offer – Slide Rock and the various forest trails along the banks of Oak Creek offer a refreshing break from the elements. It’s a long way from my actual home, but the attraction of Sedona cannot be ignored.

  • Descending into the Red Rocks

    Descending into the Red Rocks

I turned off 89A into the signposted Red Rock State Park, not really having a clear understanding of where i was going, but a reasonably good understanding of what I wanted; a good sunset vantage point of the Red Rocks. I eventually found, but the journey there was also interesting, as is evidenced by this image. Sedona, Arizona, 2017.

  • Cathedral Rock

    Cathedral Rock

My big lesson with this Cathedral Rock image is that I got there too late to pick out the only and one good spot on the river's edge to avoid the tree limbs becoming too big a focal point in the image. I didn't even mind the fact that i got my feet wet. PSA, wide angle lens is probably not a good choice for this image. Red Rock State Park, Arizona, 2017.

  • Cathedral Rock Reflections

    Cathedral Rock Reflections

After abandoning my efforts to get a shot of Cathedral Rock from the nearby river, I found this rocky plateau with plenty of reflection opportunities. I did have to wait my turn, though, as a bunch of other photographers had the same idea! Sedona, Arizona, 2017.

  • Cathedral Rock

    Cathedral Rock

After pottering about by the river looking for good sunset vantage point (they were all gone), I took a walk and found this rocky plateau beneath Cathedral Rock. Lots of good foreground opportunities to be found at this location - which is part of the Crescent Moon Park in Sedona, Arizona. 2017.

  • Lover's Knoll and Broken Arrow

    Lover's Knoll and Broken Arrow

Found this fantastic overlook on the winding 89A road out of the Red Rock State Park. It looks out over Lover's Knoll towards Oak Creek and the Broken Arrow rock formations. Totally amazing landscape. Sedona, Arizona, 2017.

  • Crescent Moon Park

    Crescent Moon Park

Crescent Moon Park, part of the Red Rock State Park in Sedona, Arizona. I happened upon this place, somewhat by accident. I had been "following my nose" to find a vantage point of the Cathedral Rock background before finding this picturesque little corner of the mountains. 2017.

  • Broken Arrow

    Broken Arrow

Didn't know it at the time, but these stunning rock formations in the Red Rock State Park overlook the Broken Arrow Jeep trail that we would see the very next morning. Sunset in Sedona looks so magnificent that I'll surely have to go back. Arizona 2017.

  • Red Rock State Park

    Red Rock State Park

We found this spot very complete accident. After taking photos of Cathedral Rock down at Crescent Moon Park, we were climbing out of the valley when a sharp turn in the rock led us to this vista. And what a sight. We ended up spending about 40 minutes here taking in the view. Sedona, Arizona, 2017.

  • Sedona Sights

    Sedona Sights

Some interesting view in downtown Sedona, deepest Arizona. We were heading down the hill towards the Pink Jeep tours HQ when this vintage car presented an enticing foreground for the Red Rock landscape. 2017.

    Pink Jeep and Red Rocks

One of the, almost iconic for the region, Pink Jeeps during a pause in the Broken Arrow tour to take in the majesty of the vast expanse of pastel colored rock in the Red Rock State Park. Sedona, Arizona, 2017.

  • Red Rock Mountains

    Red Rock Mountains

I can just imagine wakening up in the morning to this sight everyday; and looking out over this vista in the Sedona Broken Arrow trail, it seems many Arizonans have just that privilege. Arizona, 2017.

  • Rocks with no Name

    Rocks with no Name

I loved the features in these strikingly red rocks; especially the small holes that resembled airplane windows in the foreground rock. This is one of the many fantastic scenes on the Broken Arrow trail in Sedona, Arizona. 2017.

  • Broken Arrow and Sedona

    Broken Arrow and Sedona

This is one of the signature vistas on the Pink Jeep tour Broken Arrow trail. It's a truly stunning sight and my only regret was that I didn't get to see it during a sunset; perhaps that will a good reason to come back to the Red Rock State Park. Arizona, 2017.

  • US89A

    US89A

The run north from Sedona to Flagstaff on US-89A is quite magnificent. You can see the winding roads in this image, taking you up to this plateau at the Oak Creek Vista. Would've loved to have had the chance for a long exposure at this spot. Arizona, 2017.

    Lonely Cactus

At this point on Interstate-17, cactus trees are becoming rare due to the altitude. This one stands in isolation just of the interstate. Arizona, 2021.

    Dipping Sedona Sun

You travel around the desert trying to capture those classic western scenes and when you find one you have to make the most of the opportunity. The sun sets over the horizon in a smoke filled sky over Sedona. Arizona, 2021.

  • Coming Home

    Coming Home

I love Sedona so much that the descent from US Highway 89-A into this landscape, with layers upon layers of rock formations becomes a very welcome sight. Arizona, 2021.
