Route 66

Arizona Route 66

When I hear of Route 66, I have visions of roadside café’s, repair shops, and Art Deco and Art Moderne installations. I think of families making long summer drives to the coast, stopping off for a hamburger while their car is serviced for the next leg of a 2 of 3 day drive. Interstates, air travel, and modern auto-technology has consigned those images to the past. However, relics remain everywhere. In my experience, the biggest variety of those monuments to the post-WWII period of escapism are in Arizona. From the the famous Winslow (made famous by the Eagles) and its temperate landscape, to the downright desert and arid scenes west of Kingman. It is all here in Arizona, and it has been a joy to trace this route on various trips.

This is everyone's the idea of Route 66; so when you combine that with an Eagles tribute, all the better. This is exactly what presents itself in Winslow, Arizona; a testimonial to the song 'Take it Easy'. This is in 2017.

Standin' on the Corner in Winslow Arizona. I have to admit, although quirky, I was as hyped to visit Winslow as I was anywhere else on my Arizona trip. Who doesn't love a tribute to the Eagles? Perhaps the local staff, who hear 'Take it Easy' on a loop. 2017

This is Flagstaff train station. This corner of Flagstaff was alive with activity, including numerous trains thundering through this outpost; despite the more serene look in this scene. Arizona, 2017.

I loved the colours in this scene, but not so much the lack of a tripod, resulting in a grainy / noisy image. So I decided to play around a little in Photoshop to create this faux-oil painting effect. Arizona, 2017.
