For the last ten years or more, the Hover Dam has been in the news for the wrong reasons. Climate change has contributed to lowering of the upstream Lake Mead to generally historically low levels, threatening water supply and even (eventually) the power supply to Las Vegas and beyond. The plight if the local environment aside, the Hoover Dam is a breathtaking structure, nestled tightly into the steep sided canyons of the Colorado River. The landscape and the structure, it is both intimidating and captivating. As someone who has an issue with heights, the walk around the crest was more than a little nerve-wracking, but certainly worth it to get those sweeping shots down the downstream face. It’s certainly a structure that should not be missed, and is a place where you can marvel at both the engineering audacity and great feats that can be achieved when a nation or government is compelled to invest in infrastructure.
