Washington DC

America’s Capital City

Washington DC., is one of those cities where you’ll find it very difficult to work your way around all of the museums, sites, and landmarks. Three visits in, and I feel that there’s still plenty to see. My interest, as much as anything, is in photographing the city. Most of my photography to date has focused on major Washington DC. landmarks such as the Mall, Washington Monument, Congress, and the Lincoln Memorial. Those are the major landmarks that everyone is familiar with, but I’ve also sought to take long exposure shots of the grand government buildings, such as the Department of Justice and the Hoover Building. Above all, I do enjoy being in one of the old east coast American cities. There’s an energy and an eclectic feel that reminds me of home.

  • Jefferson Memorial

    Jefferson Memorial

A black and white of the marble columns of the Jefferson Memorial - this was a monument that I had yet to visit, despite several prior visits to Washington DC. Taken in the summer of 2022.

  • Jefferson Memorial

    Jefferson Memorial

I love the marble columns of the various monuments around Washington DC - they are so photogenic, but they do though require a wide aspect ratio to do the photograph justice. This is the Jefferson Memorial, 2022.

  • COVID Memorial

    COVID Memorial

The Washington Monument COVID memorial - this was in the early stages of this movement, as I believe the memorial has grown significantly since this shot was taken in 2022.

  • Lincoln Memorial

    Lincoln Memorial

A shot of the Lincoln Memorial - sans people. I actually spent many hours in Photoshop removing the many hundreds of people that were originally in this image. Washington DC, 2022.

  • Washington Monument

    Washington Monument

A short long exposure of the reflecting pool of the Washington Monument, with a view of the distant US Congress building. Washington DC in the evening is such a calming atmosphere. 2022.

  • Washington Monument Sunset

    Washington Monument Sunset

A sunset view of the Washington Monument. I had been riding a Lime bike about Washington DC that evening, which was extremely liberating and also very convenient in getting to most of the city spots on short order. 2022

  • Smithsonian

    Smithsonian

A view of the original Smithsonian Museum taken from a position along the National Mall in Washington DC, 2022.

  • Indiana Street

    Indiana Street

One of the things I like to do in Washington DC is seek out locations for long exposure photography. This was one such location, Indiana Street. 2022

  • Tidal Basin

    Tidal Basin

A view of a distant Jefferson Memorial, looking out from the walking path around the Tidal Basin. I can tell that it was *hot* walking around there that day, and there were no refreshment options available - be warned if you come walking here! Washington DC, 2022.

  • Washington Dancers

    Washington Dancers

Dancing couples on Pennsylvania Avenue offered an instant win when I started my evening photography walk in the summer of 2022. Washington DC.

  • Pennsylvania Avenue

    Pennsylvania Avenue

A look down Pennsylvania Avenue towards Congress in Washington DC. This was a very busy scene and, as such, not one that I would normally go for as a black and white conversion, but I do feel that the subject afforded a classic look that made it work. 2017.

  • US Congress

    US Congress

This is a 4 second long exposure of Pennsylvania Avenue, looking towards the US Congress in Washington DC. It was late in the evening and there actually wasn't that much traffic about, hence the more sporadic light trails. 2017.

  • US Congress on the Mall

    US Congress on the Mall

A view of the US Congress, taken from the Mall. Glad we turned up on this particular year as in recent years the building was undergoing restoration with lots of scaffolding around the roof. 2017.

  • Department of Commerce

    Department of Commerce

This is the Department of Commerce in Washington DC. I loved the simplicity in the Washington DC architecture: it really lends itself to black and white photography with the simple lines and implicit grandeur. 2017.

  • Washington Monument

    Washington Monument

A view of the Washington Monument, looking resplendent at night at the end of the Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool. I felt that a panoramic image was the best way to approach this, particularly as I only had wide angle lenses that night. 2017.

  • Lincoln Memorial

    Lincoln Memorial

This is truly a magnificent structure and absolutely sure to make to pause for a moment to breath in the history: the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. I was happy for the rain to add some depth to the image - however, a few moment s later I got totally drenched on the walk back to Pennsylvania Av. 2017.

  • Lincoln Memorial

    Lincoln Memorial

This is a faux-distressed image of the Lincoln Memorial. For anyone that hasn't seen it; I would suggest that this one of the more breathtaking monuments to a world leader that I have ever seen in person. It was very busy, hence the unorthodox approach to the image, but very thought provoking inside. 2017.

  • Lincoln Memorial

    Lincoln Memorial

The reflecting pool near the Lincoln Memorial doing its job - with Washington DC looking resplendent in the August sunshine of 2017.

  • Arlington National Cemetery

    Arlington National Cemetery

Almost didn't feel like taking a photo of the Arlington Cemetery; it seemed a little disrespectful to be a tourist in such a place, but it is iconic and certainly worthy of pausing and reflecting on the such a site. 2017

  • Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

    Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The Tomb of the Unknown Solider, devoid of any tourists in the image. Very quiet, very serene. Washington DC. 2017.
