South Carolina

The Palmetto State

I’ve had two visits to South Carolina – one to visit Clemson University, and the other to combine a week at the beach with a visit to Charleston. The visit to Clemson was a deep dive into American college football culture. We took in Clemson football game, and it happened to be military appreciation day. As you can imagine, that came with huge doses of Americana and patriotism. The trip to the Myrtle Beach featured a little less pomp and circumstance, as you can imagine, but I am assured that it was a must-do trip if I am to truly understand life in the South. No trip through the South, though, can be complete with staying in Charleston. Touring the old town seemed like an immersive experience in antebellum history of the state. It reminded me very much of New Orleans, which also has strong colonial roots.

    Brewing Storm

It really was a glorious summer’s day on the Myrtle Beach, as can be seen by the scores of people enjoying the waves on the other side of the pier. However, I was watching the massive cloud systems that were forming to the north. They were not much of a threat that afternoon, but as you can probably imagine, they made for quite a light show later in the evening. South Carolina, 2021.

    Atlantic Ocean Breakers

There was just something about the Atlantic Ocean waves that pounded the Myrtle Beach coastline on this summer’s day in 2021. The water was so refreshing and so clear – so much so that I spent a lot of time trying to catch the crest of the rollers as they broke on this quite steep beach front. South Carolina, 2021.

There doesn't look like a lot of sunshine for these beachgoers to enjoy. However, as this was the height of summer on the Atlantic coast in South Carolina, the water was actually very inviting and as all of us in the south know that the heat never really goes away. 2021

A view underneath the Myrtle Beach pier. This was an "off-day" for the beach as the weather was pretty poor. So much so, that I had to find alternative photographic subjects, such as this view underneath the boardwalk. South Carolina, 2021.

This is one of the Myrtle Beach piers, taken during an evening of stormy weather. I managed to spend some time on the beach between thunderstorms, determined to catch a long exposure of the pier.
