I’ve had two visits to South Carolina – one to visit Clemson University, and the other to combine a week at the beach with a visit to Charleston. The visit to Clemson was a deep dive into American college football culture. We took in Clemson football game, and it happened to be military appreciation day. As you can imagine, that came with huge doses of Americana and patriotism. The trip to the Myrtle Beach featured a little less pomp and circumstance, as you can imagine, but I am assured that it was a must-do trip if I am to truly understand life in the South. No trip through the South, though, can be complete with staying in Charleston. Touring the old town seemed like an immersive experience in antebellum history of the state. It reminded me very much of New Orleans, which also has strong colonial roots.
