Oklahoma

Fly-Over Country

One of the greatest road trips we have taken took us through western Oklahoma. Many have questioned what I enjoyed about a landscape of never ending plains, but that really was part of the attraction. I thoroughly enjoyed travelling along those arrow straight roads, littered with windmills, and through the expansive farmland that seemingly had no end. It might not be Disney, but it is still an important landscape in the U.S. One of the more interesting locations we visited was the Great Salt Plains State Park. The park offers crystal digging on the salt plains, but at a site that is approx. 1 mile out. America being America, you can, of course, drive and we did so. However, our experience was in the midst of a massive mid-west storm, which presented less than safe conditions. It remains an experience that I am truly glad we took the effort to make happen.

    Wichita Mountains Dam

Its always great to find an impressive dam and spillway in the wild, including this mass concrete example just off the Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway. Oklahoma, 2002.

    Wichita Mountains Lake

The lovely clear water in this lake betrays the reality of the weed strewn lakebed. Located off one of the walking trails near the Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway. Oklahoma, 2002.

I love capturing these scene - a wide open aperture of an open landscape from behind a tree lined vantage point. Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway, Oklahoma, 2002.

    Wichita Mountains Prairie Dog Crossing

This is one of the last stops on the road out west of the Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway. Its a great a great place to stop as you'll get a view of the many prairie dogs. Oklahoma, 2002.

    Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway

My last image on the road heading west out of the Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway. The winding roads are photogenic anywhere in America, but no less so here. Oklahoma, 2002.

    Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway

This is looking west outside of the Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway - and where the mountains start to give way to the apparently endless plains of the midwest. Oklahoma, 2002.

  • Rural Oklahoma

    Rural Oklahoma

The endless plains of the rural Oklahoma landscape are actually very photogenic. In this case the static windmill was a nice break on the horizon - a modern look contrasting nicely with the old farmhouse buildings. 2020.

  • Oklahoma Windmills

    Oklahoma Windmills

Old and new in Rural Oklahoma. Some say the landscape is blighted by the windmills. They don't ruin it for me, but I don't live there. 2020.

It will have been a very long time since this field was grazed upon, perhaps back to the days of the original conflict? Washita Battlefield, Oklahoma, 2020.

    Backcountry Storm

You can see one of the forward ridges of an incoming thunderstorm over Cherokee, one that would juts rip through this area with some dramatic rain. Oklahoma. 2020.

  • Small Town Storm

    Small Town Storm

This massive thunderstorm would sweep right over us in matter of minutes, almost before we could jump in the car - and it was an absolute cracker of a storm. Cherokee, Oklahoma. 2020.

  • Great Salt Plains Reflections

    Great Salt Plains Reflections

Only an hour earlier this landscape was being battered by an almighty storm, leaving this rather peaceful scene in its wake. For perspective, you can drive on these plains on a normal day. Great Salt Plains, Oklahoma. 2020

  • Salt Plains Sunset

    Salt Plains Sunset

Such a peaceful and magnificent rustic sunset - it was quite the contrast from an hour earlier when a massive storm swept through creating this water-laden scene. Great Salt Plains, Oklahoma. 2020

This was taken the day after a major thunderstorm had moved through the area and flooded these, the Great Salt Plains of western Oklahoma. This is quite the eye opening landscape, bang in the middle of the plains of the midwest. 2020.
