New York

The City That Never Sleeps

New York City is one of those metropolis’ that I love. Just like many big European cities, there is an unmistakable and addictive energy, and also a sense of endless surprises and quirks. The sense that everything and anything can - and probably is - happening is palpable. As an engineer / photographer, I love the gall of the high rises. However, I also love to capture the energy of the city in my photographs - Times Square and Wall Street is a great place to capture chaotic buzz of the city.

    Grand Central Station

Of all the places we could've eaten in New York City, we actually had dinner in Grand Central Station on our first night - and it was pretty good. 2008.

  • Hudson River

    Hudson River

The great thing about New York City is the opportunity get shots of some of the most iconic American images, such as this of the Statue of Liberty, complete with a U.S. Coast Guard vessel on the Hudson River. 2008.

  • State of Liberty

    State of Liberty

A cold March morning in 2008, and Lady Liberty looks out across the Hudson River towards New York City. This is one of the few images that I have had published in print.

  • Broadway Avenue

    Broadway Avenue

One of my older shots, and one that apparently seems to be popular. A selective colour shot of downtown Manhattan, on Broadway. New York City, 2008.

  • Wall Street Chatter

    Wall Street Chatter

This image looks a little dated now; look at the overcoats these two "high flyers" are wearing. I wonder what they were talking about. This was just a few months before the Crash of 2008, NYC.

  • Brooklyn Bridge

    Brooklyn Bridge

A large dose of matte applied to this black and white image of the Brooklyn Bridge, in New York City in the Rain, 2008.

  • Brooklyn Bridge

    Brooklyn Bridge

A seriously gloomy and rainy Saturday morning in New York City. This is looking back towards downtown Manhattan, NYC. 2008

  • Rainy Brooklyn

    Rainy Brooklyn

A little bit of manipulation to enhance the rain in this image. It was certainly a gloomy Saturday morning in New York City, and I wasn't about to spend too much more time here for fear of getting my camera wet. 2008.

  • Broadway in the Rain

    Broadway in the Rain

This scene reminds me of rainy afternoons back in Scotland. Sometimes it was nice to get inside a busy bar and ride the day out. A gloomy Saturday afternoon in New York City

  • Broadway at Times Square

    Broadway at Times Square

It was a very gloomy Saturday afternoon in Midtown Manhattan, with umbrellas everywhere. I had to get little creative in post processing to add some life to these shots. NYC, 2008.

  • Midtown Manhattan

    Midtown Manhattan

A dated image of the New York City skyline, post 9/11 but pre Freedom Tower, but with a prominent Empire State Building. Taken from the GE Building. 2008

  • Radio City

    Radio City

The famous Radio City Music Hall Midtown Manhattan. This is an older image, taken in 2008. I added a faux lomo effect to this image, which might have been typical of my images at the time.

  • Chicago on Broadway

    Chicago on Broadway

One of the enduring Broadway plays in New York City; this is a series of promotional displays for the Chicago musical. 2008.

  • 5th Avenue

    5th Avenue

Another dose of bokeh for this shot of a yellow cab in midtown Manhattan, New York City. 2008.

  • Yellow Cab Charge

    Yellow Cab Charge

An army of New York City Yellow Cabs charge down 5th Avenue. Taken from Washington Square Park, NYC. 2008

  • Big Apple Icons

    Big Apple Icons

Two massive icons of New York City; the Empire State Building and the Macy's department store.

  • Bird Man of New York

    Bird Man of New York

I would imagine that this guy is a fixture in New York city - feeding the pigeons outside Macy's in Midtown Manhattan. 2022.

  • Empire State

    Empire State

A simple image of the original skyscraper in New York City - the Empire State Building. It's still a focal point on the city skyline, despite being dwarfed by many of the new residential towers. 2022.

  • New York Monolith

    New York Monolith

It may seem plain and soulless, but I actually see alot of beauty in this midtown Manhattan skyscraper. There's no covering height with aesthetics, it's all about engineering, height, and functionality. I like it. New York City, 2022.

  • Radio City

    Radio City

Another iconic combination in New York City - the Radio City music hall and the fountains.

  • Reaching for the Sky

    Reaching for the Sky

I love the plain, rigid, and repetitive features on this midtown Manhattan skyscraper. It screams 70's and functionality, and I see a certain beauty in it. Such lines really lend this image to a black and white conversion. New York City, 2022.

  • Rockefeller Plaza

    Rockefeller Plaza

There's something about a tree lined with dazzling lights, it always feels so seasonal - but this was in June! Rockefeller Plaza, at the GE Building, New York City. 2022.
