Detroit

The Motor City

I’ve visited Detroit, Michigan, just once – in March of 2018. I was there for work, but did manage to get out one evening to get some long exposure shots of the downtown area. This included the iconic General Motors towers, which dominate the skyline. For me, Detroit had a reputation of being somewhat of a depressed city, perhaps unfairly due to its depiction in many post-apocalyptic movies, and even as the subject location of a favourite Dire Straits song! But perhaps fairly given the economic hammering it took in 2008. The cold weather contributed to this perception, and the steam rising up from the drains just perpetuated the cold, north east United States big city feel. That being said, I loved the photographs that I got and would happily visit again. Despite everything, I actually love the energy of these big and very old American metropolis’.

    Renaissance Center

This is the GM Renaissance Center. I quite like downtown Detroit - it has a quite a mix of contemporary, classic, the more dated looking facades. 2018

  • GM Renaissance Center

    GM Renaissance Center

The GM Renaissance Center, a very famous landmark in downtown Detroit, made famous, perhaps, during the 2008 financial crises given its symbolic representation of a flailing auto industry. 2018

  • Windsor, Canada

    Windsor, Canada

Directly across the Trenton from Detroit lies the relatively sleepy city of Windsor, in Canada. Compared the U.S. metropolis, this places looks like a backwater. 2018.

  • GM Renaissance Center Riverfront

    GM Renaissance Center Riverfront

Sunset creeps up behind the GM Renaissance Center; the iconic Detroit towers on the Detroit River shoreline. 2018.

  • GM Towers

    GM Towers

The GM Renaissance Center - perhaps a symbol of a depressed motor industry in Detroit - these ominous looking towers dwarf anything else in the city and, to me, have a kind of intimidating and dominating appearance.

  • Detroit Princess

    Detroit Princess

It's a long way to come to find a Mississippi style riverboat in the Great Lakes. This is the Detroit Princess, moored on the dock in Detroit, on the Detroit River, with the main crossing into Canada visible in the background. 2018.

  • Hart Plaza and Jefferson Avenue

    Hart Plaza and Jefferson Avenue

Hart Plaza and Jefferson Avenue; a series of towers and what looks like a dormant water feature near the riverfront in Detroit. Lots of flags on this side of the river; I noticed just one on the Canadian side. 2018.

  • Transcending

    Transcending

This artwork is known as 'Transcending' and is a tribute to the Labor Movement. Perhaps it is fitting to see such a monument in the city of Detroit, long something of a bellwether place describing the fortunes of this demographic group. 2018.

  • Downtown Detroit

    Downtown Detroit

Some lovely pastel colours in this image - admittedly by design (in post processing) for this beautiful tower in downtown Detroit. 2017

  • Detroit Sunset

    Detroit Sunset

Always been fascinated by the steam being vented in the NE American cities - often wondered what actually was down there. This is Detroit, on a cold Spring day. 2018.

  • GM Renaissance Center

    GM Renaissance Center

I walked around Detroit the night before, looking for good locations for a shot of the GM Renaissance Center: those ominous auto industry towers that grab the Detroit landscape. This juxtaposition of old and new seemed like one of the best vantage points. 2018.

  • Detroit Light Trails

    Detroit Light Trails

This seemed like a good spot for some light trails, and a local bus happily presented the perfect subject. It was a very cold night and I was having trouble with a new tripod, so I was reasonably happy with this effort. 2018.
