  1. U.S. Beyond the Gulf

Colorado

The Rocky Mountains

Colorado is one my favourite states in the U.S. From a photography perspective, it has so much to offer, but the state just seems nice. It helps, of course, that I have seen the places such as Fort Collins and Colorado Springs, and that I have not actually visited Denver. Regardless, the landscape is breathtaking – from Pike’s Peak, the Garden of the Gods, Horsetooth Reservoir, and the Canyon City Gorge – it is amazing that one state can be home to so many wondrous locations. Even venturing south towards the desert, wonders can be found. The Great Sand Dunes was an attraction that I was completely unaware of, but now that I have spent time there it was ranks as one of my favourite places in the U.S. All that being said, there is so much more to explore in Colorado, and I look forward to seeing it.

    Horsetooth Reservoir

At 5,400 ft in elevation, I jogged bac up this hill to get to my car and I was absolutely knackered. Horsetooth Reservoir, Fort Collins, Colorado, 2010

    Horsetooth Reservoir Highway

I loved the winding s-curces around the various spillway crests on the east side of the Horsetooth Reservoir, near Fort Collins, in Colorado. 2010

In true Instagram style, I went for the square crop on this image, and I actually think that it works. This is the road that round alongside Horsetooth Reservoir, near Fort Collins in Colorado. 2010

    Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings

Probably the most interesting of locations for these 12th century Puebla cliff dwellings. Deep in the heart of Mesa Verde, on the edge of the American desert in Colorado, 2010

  • Mesa Verde Canyon

    Mesa Verde Canyon

It's no Grand Canyon, but these (more vegetated gorges) were interesting in their own right. Certainly wouldn't want to get stuck at the bottom. Mesa Verde, Colorado, 2010

  • Mesa Verde

    Mesa Verde

Anyone that watched Star Trek might agree that this looks somewhat similar to the Crystalline Entity. Interestingly, this was in a similarly barren wilderness in Mesa Verde, Colorado, 2010

  • Barren Wilderness

    Barren Wilderness

I think that there must've been some kind of wildfire here, as most of the trees were just ashen stumps. Made for a very barren and mysterious landscape. Mesa Verde, Colorado, 2010

  • Mesa Verde Rock

    Mesa Verde Rock

A textured image of a barren tree, clinging to life on the edge of the leading Mesa that sits proudly on the horizon as you enter Mesa Verde proper. Colorado, 2010

This was the last shot that I took as we defending down from the top of Mesa Verde and onto the plains below. Mesa Verde truly is the gateway to the desert. 2010

  • Glorious Colorado Sky

    Glorious Colorado Sky

Quite an amazing cloud formation, and an equally interesting set of rock formations in Mesa Verde. This was my first introduction to the American desert, and I've been fascinated ever since. 2010.
