California

The Golden State

I’ve had some amazing experiences during my limited opportunities to travel through California. Those experiences in include Disney Land, Los Angeles, Holywood, and the last remnants of Route 66 in San Bernardino. However, is the landscape that has captured my photographic imagination more than anything else. My most memorable experience of the natural world in California was traveling through Death Valley, experiencing the searing heat of the Badwater Road, Furnace Creek and Zabriskie Point. However, while the desert somewhat defines California and its climate, the Pacific coastline from Oceanside down to San Diego is just as captivating. A sunset at Coronado Beach was one of the experiences of a lifetime, and for me, a first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean.

    Nevada / California Line

Arrow straight American highway are part of the draw of this country, and when you get them in the desert, it is all the more special. This is the state line east of Death Valley, California, 2010

  • California Desert Highway

    California Desert Highway

Another arrow straight desert highway. This one is in eastern California just south of Death Valley. I love the way the desert expanse slowly graduates the base of the mountains. Fantastic place. 2010

    Lonely California Highway

Who doesn't love an American road trip, with arrow straight roads like this. Eastern California, 2010

  • Badwater Road

    Badwater Road

I just love the American highway, especially in the desert. This is Badwater Road, in California's Death Valley. I love the way the road disappears and gives way to the vast expense of the desert - a real sense of scale.

  • Badwater Road

    Badwater Road

What better way to capture a road trip shot is to bet an undulating desert highway, complete with a camper van? Badwater Road, Death Valley, California, 2010

    Badwater Photo Opp

I couldn't stay out in that heat very long, so I can sympathize with this couple if taking this shot got a little stressful. The is fully 275 feet below sea level. Inhospitable, to say the least. 2010

  • Death Valley Basin

    Death Valley Basin

I can quite imagine a film or two being shot here - maybe an early Star Trek episode. This in Death Valley, rear Dantes Peak, California, 2010

    Zabriskie Highway

Another desert landscape with a rippling road surface - all down to the long lens though. Death Valley, California, 2010

    Ripples in the Desert

This is Zabriskie Point, with some quite incredible - alien looking - landscapes. It's all a simple matter of erosion, but quite beautifully done. 2010

    Zabriskie Landscape

Some fantastic colours, patterns, and topography in California's Death Valley. This is Zabriskie Point. 2010.

    Zabriskie Point

My camera was packed away and we were driving, until I looked in the rear view mirror and decided to make just one more stop. What a sight it was, sunset over the mountains at Zabriskie Point, California. 2010.

    Last of the Light

The last shot I took that day, on the way back to Vegas from California's Death Valley. If you love a road trip, then you'd love this part of the world. 2010.

Not supposed to have a tripod in Disneyland at Anaheim, and I didn't. This image was shot resting on a concrete wall, late in the evening when the park was winding down. 2015

    Classic Dodge

An old Dodge at the Wigwam Hotel on Route 66 near San Bernardino, 2015. I don't actually like the Dodge brand, but it is a "classic", so therefore, it does have a certain appeal when out looking for these shots.

I didn't actually like Hollywood Boulevard, found it a bit tacky. A bit, you say!? Well, this was at the eastern end of the strip, away from all the glitz. Los Angeles, 2015.
